As a university student who spent my first & second year of uni struggling to find a good source on Moby Dick quotes, I wanted to share my exam paper from 2020 where I analysed 10 quotes out of Moby Dick on here because sharing is caring, am I right? If you’re a fellow American or English literature student, I hope this will help you understand what is also known as the “American Bible” even better. Good luck with your studies!

Consider all this; and then turn to this green, gentle, and most docile earth; consider them both, the sea…

Bertolt Brecht started working on his theatre theories during 1920s and his practice was mostly influenced by the German director Erwin Piscator who had already coined the phrase “Epic Theatre” at that time. Piscator showed the signs of a new theatre era and Brecht contributed and developed these theatre forms.

Brecht’s theories refused to follow the traditional dramatic theatre which sought for audience’s empathy and created a perfect illusion of reality. Rather, he focused on finding a way to shock his audience by making the incidents in his plays “strange and abstract”.

After years of practice, he produced The Caucasian…

First coined by Martin Esslin in 1961, Theatre of Absurd goes way back to the 1920’s when avant-garde experimental works started to emerge. Though, it reached its peak in 50’s France as a reaction to WW2. People were so deranged because of the endless wars that they started to question God and their reason for being on Earth.

This post-war trauma resulted in the existential philosophy called as existentialism. Existentialists tried to understand the cruelty of the meaningless of life and tried to expose the crisis that it caused in the human beings. …

Eugene O’Neill’s partly autobiographical play Long Day’s Journey into Night deals with the dramas of Tyrone family. It is linear in timeline and as day comes to an end, the effects of morphine addiction starts to surrender the whole family starting with the mother, Mary. The worse Mary’s condition gets, the harder it becomes for the male members of the Tyrone family to keep it together. All of them dive right back into analyzing their past and blaming each other for every mistake they find in there. …

Postmodernism is a movement of diverse notions that has influenced the era of not only 50s but also the 70s and 80s. Its emergence started with the post-war politics that enforced capitalism and technology’s rapid development. The more technology got involved with people’s daily life, the more people had lost their clear sense of identity as they developed virtual personas.

“We grew up in America, and we tell American stories in American settings within American frames of reference” (Coen). There is no doubt that Americans love movies that tell their shared stories. This is why Hollywood invests in movies that have an American perspective so that the audience will have no hard time watching them. Though, the following quote from Coen hints at something more than just having an “American perspective”: “Perhaps our way of reflecting our system is more comprehensible to non-Americans because they already see the system as something alien”. American filmmaking has always walked hand in hand…

The Soviet and The United States fought side by side against the Nazi regime in World War II. But as the war came to an end, conferences that were held in post-war Germany showed that neither of these so-called allies were willing to keep their promises that were given during the war. US was always hostile towards the ideology of communism and wanted to prevent a communist state from happening. The Soviet, on the other hand, realized communism’s great influence on imperialized countries and wanted to expand its borders through spreading the ideology from Cuba to Asia. Predictably, neither sides…
